The Winter Solstice Lantern Festival provides a wide variety of volunteer opportunities. From setting up our venues with fabric, lights and lantern décor, helping with food & beverages, box office, staging and safety, to assisting audio technicians and fire techs, there is the right and exciting experience awaiting every volunteer.
Set up workshop space, check that participants have pre-registered or ask to register at Front Desk (for paid workshops), assist participants and instructor with lantern or other art making, clean up workshop space.
Hang fabric, put up lights, set up tables, assist with décor, whatever needs to be done throughout the day/night. You will not be asked to do anything beyond your capabilities. Should you be willing to lift and carry heavier things, please let us know!
Help lead the lantern processions from various starting points to the final destination. This is an outdoor volunteer position. Please dress warm and for the weather.
“Walkie Talkie” Leader: Should be familiar with neighbourhood. Arrive on time for orientation at 5pm.
“Lantern” Carrier Leader: Must be able to hold lantern upright while leading procession.
ENTRANCE GUARDIANS/DONATION COLLECTORS
Stationed at all entrance doors to the venues. Enthusiastically welcome and engage festival-goers and encourage donations. (This is one of our only ways to raise money for the festival! Super important job!). Depending on location, donation collectors may be outdoors.
STAGING TECH ASSISTANT
Assist technicians with whatever needs to be done, such as carrying cables, plugging in mics, stage set-up/strike, technical troubleshooting. Some experience in staging required.
Banner wavers will be stationed in the Roundhouse Exhibition Hall on the stage for opening ceremony (approx. 7:00 – 7:30 PM). Wear plain, black clothes, if possible (no logos or designs).
Concession set-up, sell food & beverages (no alcohol), concession clean-up. Must have cash-handling skills, and (preferably) Food Safe.
Stationed at doors of activity rooms. Manage line-ups and numbers of people in room. Answer questions, smile! Friendliness is important!
Keep an eye on the greenrooms, maintain snacks and drinks for performers, accept deliveries from F&B Crew Chief, be aware of common sense food safety, keep greenrooms tidy. At Performance Works on Granville Island provide exit door security for Fire Performers.
BOX OFFICE ASSISTANT
Sell tickets for Labyrinth of Light, check pre-sale tickets, manage VIPs (check VIP list, give them a ticket and ask them to join the line-up).
LABYRINTH OF LIGHT SET-UP
Set-up candle labyrinth (following the directions of the Labyrinth of Light Manager) with glass votive candles on sand/cork in paper bags, following the labyrinth pattern.
LABYRINTH OF LIGHT HOST
Welcome people into the labyrinth, check on candles, be “zen”, keep calm, whisper! The labyrinth is a meditation space and this is a quiet job. Gently release people from the space, point out event schedule outside of the venue for performances nearby.
LABYRINTH OF LIGHT CLOSING CEREMONY (Strike)
In a quiet, meditative manner extinguish candles as instructed (be careful not to spill wax), collect jars, sand/cork, votives, prep for storage for next year.
Assist with assembling fire sculpture, fueling fire tools, extinguishing fire tools, fire safety. Due to the nature of this exciting job, we need you to be a responsible person, who puts safety first and respects the danger of fire. This is an outdoor volunteer position. Please dress for the weather.
FIRE SAFETY/CROWD CONTROL
Direct audience, manage flow of crowd, keep people behind barricades, monitor all sides of the performance area, ensure general safety. Make sure that no one is doing anything stupid!
Clean up the decor and gently pack away for next year. Help put our host venues back to their pre-Solstice conditions. This is partially an outdoor volunteer position. Please dress for the weather.
