Lantern Making

Don't be left lantern-less! Artists from the Secret Lantern Society will help you make your own beautiful lantern. All basic materials are provided and participants are encouraged to bring pressed leaves and flowers or other decorative elements. Price is per lantern – parent & child can create one lantern together. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Note: Below, you will find samples of the various lantern styles that can be made. Registration updates will be set in November.

GLOBE LANTERN

Made on a balloon, very simple and fun.

NATURE LANTERN

Create a lantern using organic materials such as plant stalks, pressed flower petals and leaves. Materials provided, but feel free to bring your own.

PIN-PRICK LANTERN

These easy-to-make lanterns are great for smaller kids.

STAR LANTERN

Bamboo frame; can be completed in less than 5 hrs.

LAST-MINUTE LANTERNS

Register on-line to guarantee a spot and your supplies or drop in to make a simple lantern to carry in the procession that gathers in David Lam Park at 6:30pm. Lantern can be made in as short as 30 minutes but come early as supplies may run out .

COMMUNAL LANTERN PROJECT (FREE)

Drop in and work with Secret Lantern Society artists to create the Tree of Life. Be part of the magic and gain experience in this larger-than-life project every day leading up to Winter Solstice. No registration required. Please come by during scheduled times and go to the Mezzanine to help out.

Rhythm, one of the most universal forms of communication, brings the community together in the dark of winter. Learn a variety of rhythms and help lead the solstice processions. All levels welcome.
