  • 6:00 PM: Procession from Gathering Place to Roundhouse
  • 6:00 - 10:00 PM: Ongoing music, performances, workshops and food in the Roundhouse
  • 6:00 - 8:00 PM: Pin-prick Lantern Workshop
  • 8:00 - 8:30 PM: Simple little lantern procession from the Roundhouse to David Lam Park and back for those who wish.
  • 9:30 PM: Fire Finale on the Roundhouse Turntable
  • 10:30 PM: Labyrinth closing ceremony, with 10:00 PM timed ticket.

The Gathering Place

The Gathering Place will host a day of celebrations with free food, live music, last-minute lantern making and other activities. At 6:00 PM there will be a short procession to Emery Barnes Park and continues directly to the Roundhouse. Please note: there is no fire performance in David Lam Park at 7:00 PM; the fire performance has been moved to the Roundhouse Turntable at 9:30 PM

A free family event, with some ticketed venues. Suggested donation of $5/person gratefully accepted. Everyone who gives a donation or purchases a ticket to either Labyrinth of Light will receive a solstice button!

Once again the Roundhouse hosts a stunning array of indoor festivities, with simultaneous activities and performers throughout the venue. Attend the Opening Ceremony at 7:00 PM and get introduced to all the performers so you can make your choices about how to spend the darkest night.

Performance Centre

Sit beneath the giant Tree of Life in the Secret Lantern Garden and float in an ambient world soundscape created by Breathwood with rare and beautiful instruments from around the world.

Create your own shadow stories against a gorgeous shadow screen created by artist Heather Dawn Sparks and dance to accordion music by our roving players.

Lantern can be made within 30 minutes but materials are limited so please register online to reserve supplies. Come early to make your lantern and then be free to enjoy other activities before the little lantern procession at 8:00pm.

Procession leaves the Roundhouse and goes on a short mystery walk into the beauty of the darkest night before returning for on-going activities in the Roundhouse. If you were unable to attend a lantern workshop you can purchase a Globe Lantern at the front desk - $15 each.

Sit with your family and friends to create your own beautiful lanterns using organic materials such as pressed flowers and leaves. These lanterns can be made in about 90 minutes or less, so time your visit so you can enjoy other activities in the Roundhouse.  NOTE: These lanterns are not designed for use in the procession but are intended as keepsakes to beautify your home and remind you of your connection to the natural world. $25/lantern. Tea light provided, but you may purchase a 10-hour pure beeswax candle of the type used in our Labyrinth of Light for $10. See the front desk to purchase the beeswax candle.

STORIES OF SOLSTICE 7:00 - 9:00

Dance Studio

*Follow the marionette journey of "Little Guy at Bachin's", a transformativetale of a little old man selling roses and reflecting on his life. Based on music by Astor Piazzolla and text by Horatio Ferrer, created and performed by puppeteer Wryly Andherson, with live accordion accompaniment by Salmon Avalanche.

**Participate in weaving together a communally improvised spoken word nature poem to accompany a live aerial dance performance experience with Kira Schaffer and Firebelly Performance Society.

LABYRINTH OF LIGHT 6:00 – 10:30

Take a meditative journey through the Labyrinth of Light created with over 600 pure beeswax candles, with music by Lori Bella and her crystal singing bowls.

TIMED TICKETS

To ensure a space in the Labyrinth and to minimize wait times, it is strongly recommended that you purchase your TIMED TICKET online. 

Your online purchase also enrols you as a non-voting member of the Secret Lantern Society.

Please arrive at the labyrinth 15 minutes before your scheduled time slot.

$7.00 - Children under 13 FREE. Please visit on-site box office for complimentary tickets for eligible children. Advance online ticket sales end Dec 20, midnight.  Ticket purchases are non-refundable. All sales are final.
