How to Make Lanterns, Solstice Headdresses, and Sun-coloured Food

Lantern making is a 32-year tradition for the Winter Solstice Lantern Festival in Vancouver, BC.

If you are not able to sign up for a workshop on Granville Island, the Roundhouse, or at Secret Headquarters in East Van, please check out these tutorials that are designed to help you make one at home. On solstice night we hope you will join the constellation of community and lights as we honour the natural world and welcome the return of the Sun on Granville Island and Yaletown.
These videos were produced in 2020 when we were not able to gather in person, so Secret Lantern Society artists stayed home and created a small series of virtual workshops, From Our Homes To Yours. Naomi Singer, Artistic Director of Secret Lantern Society, has created four simple Solstice Lantern Workshops for you, and artist Joey Mallett shows how to make a lovely Globe Lantern. Artist Amy Biker Walker demonstrates how to craft Solstice Headdresses from plants, and Chef Karen Barnaby creates some delicious sun-coloured cookies and tea for you to share at home.

If you are enjoying these workshop videos, consider making a donation to Secret Lantern Society. The Society is not a charitable organization and is not able to provide a tax receipt for your gift, but please know that each donation, no matter small or large, is deeply appreciated!
