Festival volunteer registration is currently open!

Please create your volunteer profile in order to select tasks which might suit your special skills!

The Winter Solstice Lantern Festival provides a variety of volunteer opportunities such as preparing and staging décor, ensuring public safety, caring for the Labyrinth Of Light, collecting donations, leading a procession, or packing up at the end of the night.

We love finding the right task for every volunteer and want you to enjoy a wonderful winter solstice experience with our team. Please read through the list of tasks to get a sense of where and how your secret skills may shine!

Volunteers are needed in these neighbourhoods: Granville Island (False Creek Community Centre and Performance Works), Yaletown (the Roundhouse Community Centre ), and Strathcona (Strathcona Community Centre and outdoors).

Most roles will be on Thursday, December 21, 2023, and shift times will primarily be between 5:00 - 11:00 PM. However, there will be specific roles in the weeks approaching solstice day, especially during the Secret Solstice Salon Series (Nov. & Dec.), doing prep at Secret Headquarters, and on Granville Island on Wednesday Dec. 20th setting up the Labyrinth of Light.

WORKSHOP ASSISTANT

Help the instructor set up workshop space, check registration, assist participants with lantern making, help clean up. No experience necessary.

VENUE SET-UP

Hang fabric, put up lights, set up tables, whatever needs to be done throughout the day.  Some set up takes place outside.

PROCESSION LEADER

This is an outdoor volunteer position with some walking, so please dress for the weather and conditions. Processions are short and fun so volunteer with a friend!

  • Lantern Carrier: Carry a special lantern (provided) to lead one of the  processions. You will be asked to arrive at your location for orientation half an hour before the start and the Site Manager will show you how to carry and illuminate the lantern and give you all procession details.

  • Radio Carrier: Carry a radio to lead or follow one of the processions and communicate with the Site Manager. You will be asked to arrive at your location for orientation half an hour before the start and the Site Manager will show you how to use the radio and give all procession details.

  • Crowd control: You will help keep track of participants and make sure no one strays into forbidden areas. You will arrive at your location half an hour before the procession starts for an orientation.

ENTRANCE GUARDIANS/DONATION COLLECTORS

Enthusiastically welcome and engage festival-goers at all entrance doors to the venues. Ensure that no lit candles come into the venue. Encourage donations - this is one of our only ways to raise money for the festival so it’s a super important job! Some donation collectors may be outdoors so please dress for the weather.

DOOR MONITORS

Stand at the entrance of activity rooms and ensure line-ups are organized and relaxed. Make sure folks leave safely and quietly. Work with Staff to manage line-ups and answer questions. Encourage donations as people exit - this is one of our only ways to raise money for the festival so it’s a super important job! Friendliness is important!

GREENROOM MONITOR

The greenrooms are where the performers prepare and relax. You will monitor entry, maintain snacks and drinks, be aware of food safety, and keep greenrooms tidy.

THE GROVE MONITORS

Outdoors behind Performance Works will be a lovely lantern installation that will require the watchful eye of volunteers to relight candles, and ensure the safety of the installation and attendees alike.

BOX OFFICE ASSISTANT

Assist the Box Office Manager to sell tickets for the Labyrinth of Light, check names on the pre-sale lists, check the Guest List and assure people they will indeed get i!.

LABYRINTH OF LIGHT - SET-UP

Prepare the 500 pure-beeswax candle labyrinth with the guidance of the Labyrinth of Light Hosts (organize supplies, follow the labyrinth pattern, light the candles).

LABYRINTH OF LIGHT - USHERS & LINE MANAGEMENT

Check tickets to ensure that people have arrived 10 minutes before their timed entry. Monitor the door to allow for quiet entry, and gently guide people into the Labyrinth to maintain a gradual flow.

LABYRINTH OF LIGHT HELPER

Work with the Labyrinth Host to replace candles, monitor the coat rack area and guide participants as needed. The labyrinth is a meditative space and this is a quiet, gentle job.

LABYRINTH OF LIGHT - CLOSING CEREMONY

In a quiet, peaceful manner extinguish candles as instructed, collect jars, fold bags, and put the labyrinth gently to sleep for next year.

CLEAN-UP/STRIKE

A crucial job! Work with staff to clean up our host venues and pack up and organize items near the door for our crew to load the truck. Sometimes strike involves being outdoors/loading vehicles outdoors, so please dress for the weather and conditions.

Thank you for volunteering and being a part of this unique neighbourhood experience. We couldn’t accomplish this festival without your help!
